Saw a Russian women’s drill team riding Akhal Tekes in Louisville, KY during an international horse expo called Equitana.  All their intricate moves were beautifully performed, and then they had come together to ride super-close to each other at the trot in a big, tight rectangle.  One of the horses at the center of this suddenly reared, absolutely vertical! and did a brilliant fighting stallion impersonation! The crowd collectively gasped, but somehow, entirely without fuss and minimal breaking of ranks, the other riders just coped with this, immediately flowing past/around the obstreperous beastie and his perfectly calm-looking young rider.  She quickly got him back in hand w/out punishing him, and rejoined the group before the next movement began.  All was perfect during the rest of their display.  The horse had given absolutely no indication of his displeasure before just up and standing straight up.  His rider’s & the others’ taking absolutely no notice of this behavior brought me to the conclusion that Akhal Tekes are insane, and their riders are completely used to this.
